RUNNING ON EMPTY
It seems that a lot of musicians these days are re-living the Jackson Brown song and simply running on with no direction or purpose and really no clue as to where they are heading. In that back of their minds they have a clue that they would like to be rich and famous but they rally have no clue how to get there.
They basically think you go out and play some gigs and the powers that be will come to you, discover you and make you a star with very little effort on your part. Well, I hope everyone is suiting down out there because that is not the way things happen in the real world.
It is still a lot of who you know and being in the right place at the right time. And that, my friend comes down to networking and beating the bushes and knocking on doors and making phone calls and ending out the thousands of emails. It basically entails getting everyone that you know to help you create abuzz that might, and that is a very big might get you that big break.
You see no matter how talented you are and how great your songs are you still need to get that talent and those songs in the hands of the right people if they are ever going to do you any good. That is not being mean but rather being realistic. It would be an awful lot like you waking up one day with the knowledge to be a brain surgeon. Unless you can convince someone that you are indeed a great surgeon there is little chance that anyone in their right mind is going to allow you to cut open their head.
I certainly hope I didn’t shatter any illusions. In this business, as in most businesses you truly need to be constantly networking. You never know if the person that you do a very miniscule job for today could end up helping you ink a million dollar contract a year down the road.
Places like myMusicCircle are filled with professionals in every area of the business and you never know what else they will need or who they know that might end up getting referred to you if you do a good job. And with the speed of computers, those things can happen literally immediately so you always need to be running full and on your “A” game.
